Restoration

Michael Tavares and Neil Hisgen, your Innkeepers, emigrated from the United States in 1999. Michael, a restoration and adaptive reuse developer has been saving historic buildings for over 20 years. Neil, a hotelier, has worked in the industry for 25 years in capacities from guest services to hotel general manager. Combining both talents has created a team with both vision and creativity, a welcome addition to the historic seaport town of Yarmouth.

Michael, a native of Boston, spent most of his early career in Boston’s Historic South End and played an active role in the revitalization of one of America’s largest historic districts. As the principle real estate broker of his Boston real estate firm, the stage was set for a productive career in saving historic landmark buildings. Eight projects later his calling led him to Key West, Florida, to expand his trade to include landscape design. Michael found Nova Scotia in the late 1980’s when he and a group of friends purchased a large historic homestead in Glenwood, Nova Scotia, 12 miles from Yarmouth.  Hence began a 10 year summer vacation destination.

Neil, a native of Racine Wisconsin, entered the US Navy in the mid 1970’s.  He was commissioned on the Air Craft Carrier; USS Kitty Hawk, and serviced as the Assistant to the Captain. After his tour he left the service and moved to Ft. Lauderdale Florida where he entered the hospitality industry. His career brought him through all levels of hotel services and eventually directed him into management.

Bed and Breakfast

Trey, Neil and Michael in the grand Entrance Hall

In late 1997, Michael and Neil met in Ft. Lauderdale and began discussing options for their lives. In 1998, while on summer vacation in Nova Scotia, conversation became more serious as to partnering in life and business. They returned to Nova Scotia that fall and perused the purchase of a large brick mansion in Yarmouth’s Historic District with intentions of restoration and conversion into a Bed and Breakfast. That situation became reality 48 hours later when they closed on the purchase of 17 Collins Street and the Charles C. Richards House Bed and Breakfast came to be.

In 2000, another condemned Victorian caught their attention and in July 2000 they purchased the now MacKinnon-Cann Inn located at 27 Willow Street.

Today, their two properties, located on the same block of Yarmouth’s Historic District, are landmarks in design and service. We welcome you to enjoy a step back in time and experience elegant Victorian living.
